Nomadic entrepreneurs and wanderlust travelers know the pain of struggling with your luggage. A lost bag can turn your journey into a nightmare pretty quickly.

That’s why a team with “a passion for travel, technology and design” have come together to raise the bar when it comes to baggage. Their Bluesmart crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo has successfully raised more than $2,000,000 in pre-orders from more than 8,000 backers in 110 countries around the world.

The company was named “Top Innovative Product and Service of 2014” by Forbes Magazine and the product was awarded “Best Travel Gear of 2014” by FastCompany. The company is backed by Y Combinator, Silicon Valley’s top technology accelerator.

The Bluesmart suitcase pairs with an app on your smartphone. You can lock the suitcase from your smartphone, track its location, and, thanks to a sensor in the handle, get a digital weight reading by lifting up the suitcase. Sensors inside the suitcase automatically lock the travel-on size suitcase if you part from your bag.

From a design perspective, the suitcase is perfectly made for the global road warrior, those who spend much of their daily life in and out of airports.

By far one of the coolest features of the Bluesmart is the ability to charge almost all of your devices from tablets to smartphones. There is a built in battery that is able to fully charge your devices six times over. If you’re like me I’m sure you’ve spent a good amount of time searching for charging stations at the airport.

Even worse, having to fight my way past other weary travelers all desperately trying to suck the precious energy juices from the outlet to charge dying smartphones while yapping away on important business calls. The Bluesmart changes all of that with its own USB outlet that is hooked up to an impressively powerful battery.

The product also aims to be a Fitbit of sorts for your travel life. It will track your miles traveled, airports visited and time spent in each country and display it on your Bluesmart app. Synced with your digital calendar, the app will also send you travel and packing reminders.

You are also able to digitally lock and track your suitcase using your smartphone. If by chance you become separated from your suitcase, the automatic lock mechanism can be configured to kick in making it impossible for others to access your goods. Also, you can see where your suitcase may have strayed off to using the maps feature on the app. The suitcase also comes with a key for backup as well. This feature makes it TSA friendly as they can still access your suitcase just in case you do in fact decide to check your bag.

The modern-looking, blue and black suitcase has a front pouch that makes it easy laptop and tablet access, making fishing out your tech gadgets in the airport security line so much less stressful.

The team behind Bluesmart isn’t a group of amateurs; some of its members have founded other companies, others have backgrounds in aerospace engineering and product development but as with all crowdfunded hardware projects it pays to expect delays.

The team also has a sense of humor. The crowdfunding campaign promises to make you the “coolest kid in the airport” and “the ultimate travel baller.” “Take that, James Bond,” the pitch says.
